Anyone out there foster?

MaryNY May 24, 2003 11:21 PM

We've been fostering for a local animal rescue group for five years now. We take in orphaned kits, pups, and the occasional chicken. Our adult cats won't tolerate other adult cats but are very good with the babies and help to socialize them once they are out of infancy. Our dogs are pretty mellow and good with both the kits and pups.
The chickens are a bit more touchy, but that's because we keep bantams and have rescued full sized breeds. (We don't keep them permanently as we don't have space, but we keep them long enough for others to find people who will care for them.)
It works out pretty well most of the time.
Now, how about the rest of you? (I've never been the very first poster on a message board before. wow!)

Hi Mary! I was doing fostering for awhile but couldn't part with the last 3 I fostered, LOL!, so I gave up long term fostering and switched to very short term knowing that they had a place to go in a very short time. Had to switch my rescue efforts to other areas and leave the long term fostering to someone else. Wiscats is one of the best foster moms around these parts. Hope she stops in to tell you all about her wonderful brood of fosterkits. But I can tell you one thing...we need more people willing to foster animals until permanent homes can be found for them. Bless your heart for doing it! BTW, does the NY in your name stand for NY? It's where I am from.

Hi!

I just got my first little foster boy this past Tuesday. His name is Elliot. He is quite a character and has definitely made himself at home. It's going to be so hard to see him go, as I have already fallen in love. I just keep telling myself that that pain will be replaced by the joy of being able to help another cat once Elliot has gone to his forever home.

Hi all,
my wife and i helped run a group in our area for three years and as of this year we decided that there had to be more groups out there so we started our own group. during the four years that we have been doing this we had go thru our home about 2500 cats and kittens and we get attached to some , especially the special needs ones but we found out that if we adopt them out they get a better home than what we could provide and the reward we get is the pictures and stories that the new homes tell us and give us. so just remember that you can give them a good home but there are better homes out there and that will free you up to help more animals.
