Wild Cat- Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Hi,

I'm not to sure on what I am to do.A month ago a cat wandered into my backyard and started sleeping on my garden furniture. It doesn't have a tag, It is not declawed, and has not been neutred. It is a boy, and is lounging in my backyard as I write this letter. I decided that it was probably wise not to feed it but I left some water out in a dish for it. Any how, It is really friendly and affectionate but I just don't have the room in my house to take in another animal. All of the pets I have in my house now are from people who couldn't care for them anymore, so I took them in. Most of them would make a good snack for a hungry cat. So I have this dilemma. Do I leave it out to die in the winter or do I give to an already packed animal shelter. It's really a good cat and it would be a shame to let it die. Any advice on what I should do or who I should contact for more information would be greatly appreciated.

Since this boy is so friendly, it's possible he belongs to someone. Maybe if you put up some "found cat" flyers around the town in vets offices, supermarkets, street poles, schools, libraries etc, someone will come claim him. In the meantime, maybe you could have him neutered at least? Is there a rescue group in your area that might help? Sometimes you have better luck with the smaller rescues than with the shelter.....especially if the shelter euthanizes. Good luck.

Hello,
Have you tried local rescue groups yet? That might be your best bet. Here is the url to an excellent search engine for finding local groups. Hope it helps.

Good luck.

Hi there. If you cannot find it a home, you need to at least get it neutered. It can survive the harsh winter outside as long as you create a "den box" for it to stay warm in. If there is any way for you to construct a small box (about 2ft x 2ft), that is off the ground, small door, back to the wind, and filled with straw, it can provide shelter from the elements. It would be even better if you could put this in a garage or shed. Place food and water near it, and be sure to replace water every day during freezing temps. This is to be used as a last resort if you can't find a home or shelter for him. Most importantly is to get him neutered ASAP. Local humane societies usually have a low cost spay/neuter program you could use. www.petfinder.com also offers free classified ads for people in your position. Good Luck! ~Sara
