Cat in Heat

JaimeMarie Mar 22, 2006 06:22 AM

There is a discussion going on at the teacher site I visit. Someone has a cat in heat. A couple people told her to put vick's vapor rub in the cat's fur around it's bottom. I told them it didn't sound like a good idea, and could possible end up poisoning the cat if she licked it.
Is there anything she can do while the cat is in heat to help calm it down? She said she has made an appointment to get the cat spayed as soon as it goes out of heat.

Thank you,
Jaime

She'll just have to wait until the cat is out of heat.

why can't a cat be spayed while it is in heat? and are there dangers? My kitten was just recently done, and it happened that she was in heat

There is a much greater risk of bleeding when the cat is in heat, due to the extra estrogen. In addition, the uterus is more fragile. Therefore veterinarians prefer to wait until the cat is out of heat.

Hi Stacy,

Just wanted you to know that although some vets prefer to wait until a cat is out of heat to spay her, the surgery is perfectly safe. Where I work we routinely spay cats in heat and although the surgery takes a little longer, we haven't had any problems. There is more bleeding, but it isn't anything that puts the cat in danger or that a skillful surgeon couldn't handle.

Didn't want you to think that your vet did the wrong thing in spaying your baby while she was in heat.

thank you! I do trust my vet - just wasn't sure of the reasoning behind it all. And the patient is doing very well. =) Running around like a kitten still .
