50% PKD positive kitten

lovidentity Sep 14, 2006 05:49 PM

Hello~
I'm getting my first persian in about 1-2weeks. She is absolutely ADORABLE and I've been waiting for her for more than a month. The only thing is that her father is a PKD positive persian and this means that there is 50% chance that she will be PKD positive as well. The breeder is VERY honest and has sent in my kitten's PKD dna test to UC Davis for analysis. The results will be returning by the end of this week. I'm REALLY praying for a negative, but in case she is positive, what should I do? Should I still buy her? Will she require extra care and attention? I need some advice in what to do. I know that I really should not get worked up about this until the results come back, but just in case she is positive for PKD, I want to be prepared with an answer or a reaction. I'd appreciate any support from you~!! Thank you in advance, everyone!!

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is generally diagnosed through an ultrasound. I am not familiar with a DNA test. If the kitten is positive, it should be neutered and not be used for breeding. If positive, the cysts may grow with time and eventually destroy the kidneys, causing kidney failure. This does not happen in every case, and when it does happen, the growth rate is uneven. If the kitten is positive, there is a risk involved. If you are not willing to take that risk, select another kitten, one without PKD.

Hi,

This breeder should NOT be using a PKD positive cat for breeding. In my opinion this is totally irresponsible, as PKD is heriditary. A responsible breeder would speuter any positive cats and never use them or their offspring for breeding.

I would not buy this kitten, unless you are prepared for the possibility of losing her young. Some PKD cats will live for years, some only months. PKD causes kidney failure, as the cysts that develop "take over" normal tissue. There is less and less normal tissue left as the disease progresses.

Please think this through carefully before you make a final decision, no matter what the blood results are.
