Good food for a special needs kitty...

lil_animal_gurl Dec 24, 2006 11:21 PM

My kitty Clairee was just recently diagnosed with cystitis. She is on meds and is almost completely better, the only problem is that my vet told me that her particular condition has the tendency to turn chronic, and if it comes back, I will have to start feeding her a special diet for urinary health. I was wondering what are good foods to feed to her if I happen to need to go this route? I really REALLY do not like any product made by Hills, so if I can steer away from that option, I would prefer it.

Dry foods tend to bring on cystitis in cats, so stop all dry food.
while canned foods are OK, I prefer to see cats on fresh raw meat and bone.

Adding to this particular topic ... how safe is grocery store meat for using in a raw diet? I've been thinking of supplementing some of my cats' commercial diets with a raw food diet, and I worry about salmonella and other bacteria in the grocery store meats. Is frozen meat better than never-frozen, or is there a better source than the store?

Thanks,

Grocery-store meat is fine for cats. There is essentially no risk of salmonella, even from raw chicken. Freezing can kill some worms, but it has no effect on bacteria in meat.
