Diabetic Arthritic cat

KatMom May 06, 2007 10:49 AM

Hello,
I was referred here by a friend I met at Rainbow Bridge.
I have feline female, Sheena, who will be 17 yrs old in August. She's been diabetic for about 5 years now & I give her 2&1/2 units of insulin twice a day. She's had a bad leg for years and is getting around very slowly these days. My vet doc told me children's bayers asprin, one every three days could help her and also help her heart. (no heart problems.) I haven't seen much change, as I've been giving asprin occationally for months. I would like to know what you think of cosequin for this? I have heard this may help from another friend and also anything else that may be able to help her. ?

Thank you for any information to can give me.

I would also like to add, as I forgot previously,
that Sheena sometimes misses the litterbox and feels like going wherever she seems to be at the moment...( usually in the hallway on the way to her xtra room where the litter boxes are and her xtra water & food. I also have plaved an xtra litter box in my computer room, as it is behind the litchen and she strolls through here after her shot and soft food. I've made it very easy for a litter box to be nearby her, but I believe this causes her pain going in and out (?)> I've also bought the lower height ones, so she won't have to climd so high to get in one. She has trouble in the litter box with balancing her weight also. She is about 12 pounds and the back leg really gives her trouble also.

Aspirin, like all non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs, may cause bleeding, and thus should not be used for long-term problems. Omega-3 fatty acids often work as anti-inflamatories without the bleeding, so that would be a better choice. I assume, since your cat weighs 12 pounds, that you are feeding dry food. This is not good for any cat, especially a diabetic cat, as she should avoid carbohydrates. It is hard to say if anything would help the leg since I don't know why she is favoring it.
