Irregular nail growth

abukuchick Jun 21, 2007 10:10 PM

One of my cats has odd nail growth. Four of his front claws grow without shedding the lower part of the nail. Does that make sense? They're thick instead of sharp and they seem to be sesitive. I managed to trim 3 of them but the longest one is almost growing back into his pad and he really protests when I try to trim it, what should I do?

This happens when they don't or can't sharpen their claws. Cats sharpen their claws by pulling off part of the nail, starting at the base, leaving the pointed tip. I've seen it most often in older cats. If the claw is curving around and starting to grow into the foot, you need to cut it.
