I don't know what's wrong with our cat

cserna Jul 12, 2007 05:17 PM

About 36 hours ago, our cat, Miles, started throwing up about every 3 hrs. or so. At first he was still "himself", but then he became inactive and didn't want to eat and he has not gone to the restroom in at least a day. After a visit to the vet but still no real answers as to what's wrong with him, he's now on antibiotics, but they don't seem to have helped. The vet said he has tapeworms and he's probably had them for some time, but that shouldn't cause him to be in his current state. He has an appt. at a cat only hospital for bloodwork, FIV test, and an ultrasound tomorrow morning, but until then can anyone give me any information on what could be wrong with him? At first I thought he ate a piece of his fabric toy but xrays didn't show that although it could still be possible. If he ate his toy and needs surgery, fine!, but what's killing me is NOT KNOWING what's wrong with him.
He goes outside very seldom and is due for his round of shots this month

Some information would be helpful to evaluate the situation:

Does he have a fever?
Is he dehydrated?
How old is he?
Has he ever eaten inedible objects before?
What does he normally eat?

As far as vaccinations, rabies every three years is the only vaccination an adult cat should get.

Last night, Miles drank a little water and licked some of the gravy from his wet food! Thankfully!!! He is a little more responsive and is at the vet's today. So far she said he no longer has a fever but he is dehydrated, however, he's getting blood work, FIV/L tests and depending on results might need food supplements. She mentioned the possiblity of new xrays and maybe a severe hairball. I'm just overjoyed that he's eating/drinking...but could a severe hairball cause all that? Thank you for your response!

And to answer some of the questions:
He's about 3-4 years old.
Has never to my knowledge eaten anything inedible- I don't think that's his style.
He eats Purina CatChow Indoor, but I'm changing that after doing research because of this ordeal.
Thanks again!!!!
