New Rescue

I posted a few weeks back regarding the kitten that I had to have put down due to a Portosystemic Shunt. The vet did say that such a problem might not have been congenital (although it probably was). Under what circumstances could such a problem develop? How can I prevent such things from happening again as I am thinking about adopting another rescue kitten? I was careful to feed him food without dangerous preservatives, wheat, corn, or meat by-products. I'd appreciate any insight into this.

Thank you for your time.

Portosystemic shunts are always congenital, arising during the fetal development. Nothing you did caused it, and nothing you could have done would have prevented it.
