Update on Sola and IBD issues

solaandlunasmom Sep 25, 2007 03:43 PM

Hi there. Since you have helped me so much, I thought I'd give you an update on Sola.

If you recall, Sola was having issues with diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. After and x-ray and ultrasound, a specialist did an endoscopic biopsy and determined that Sola had moderate lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory bowel disease.

Sola was back and forth on flagyl and other medications. We finally found a balance giving budesonide every other day. The vet wanted him to take 1ml every day, but I am very cautious about steroids and asked if I could do 1/2 ml every other day and she said yes.

So, I'm happy to report that Sola has been TOTALLY normal, eating, drinking, no vomiting, normal stools for the last 3 weeks! The vet did not want to start k/d because she wanted to just have him on budesonide for a while and he is also eating Wellness canned chicken food. I tried the raw and cooked meat, but he wouldn't eat it if you recall. I also add supplements to his diet - vit A, C, D, and E once a week and cod liver oil, glucosamine and slippery elm once a week.

He goes in on Friday for another (and hopefully the last!) ultrasound of his intestines. We are also going to re-do bloodwork as his BUN is at 37 and creatinine at 2.3 and his cholestrol is at 221. But his urinalysis is totally normal and his WBC and RBC went from 4.4 and 5.62 to 6.6 and 6.37 respectively. So I'm very excited about that!

I do have one question though. Would you recommend Leukeran over budesonide to help with IBD? I would prefer to not give steroids at all, but he seems to be responding well to them.

And thanks again for all your help and advice!

As a general rule, if something is working, don't change it. I would try to wean him off the Budesonide as soon as everything is stabilized.
