Blocked cat

marespooscats May 18, 2008 06:40 PM

My 3 year old male neutered OSH/X blocked a week ago. The ER Vet was in a rush and about mutilated him getting the catheter in, but he unblocked immediately.

He came home the next day and was fine for a few days but then suddenly he went for 12 hours without peeing so I took him to the regular vet.

They were able, under anesthesia, to manually express his bladder and soon as they stopped he peed out the rest of the urine.

NOW days he sleeps all days and still goes at least 12 hours between pees. HE is currently on Purina UR and when he will eat it Eukanuba low ph canned.

My FLUTD groups says do not give the RX meds as they will make him worse do to the grains in them. THEY say to give grainless cannned or dry.

My Vet is not really up on this so PLEASE tell me what to do and what to feed him and since he is very tender in his bladder shouldn't he be on pain meds for a bit?

This is a problem typical of feeding dry food to a cat. NO CAT SHOULD BE FED DRY FOOD. Canned food or fresh meat is what a cat should be fed. You might even add some ascorbic acid to the food to acidify the urine in order to dissolve any remaining stones or crystals. It would also be a good idea to add water and salt to his food to dilute the urine.

Thanks! He IS eating some canned food (Eukanuba low ph mixed with his crf sister's NF/kd) but otherwise he still is eating dry Purina UR.

HE pees once or twice a day in huge pee clumps but I am still scared!

Is the UR and canned food OK for him or should I put him on an all meat and no grain food and should he be on a diaretic?

Throw out the dry food so there is no way he can get to it. If your other cat is eating dry food, throw that out as well. He will always be at risk of blocking if he has access to dry food. Fresh meat is best, but canned food is OK.
