Cat Constipation/Vomiting

MonicaRu Aug 18, 2008 12:35 PM

I have a 2 1/2 yr old cat that I had to take to an emergency vet at midnight last night for vomiting. He had been sleeping a lot and throwing up his food once a day for a few days. Then last night he started vomiting a clear liquid.
At that point I took him to the vet. The vet found by x-ray that my cat was very constipated. This could have been due to his eating the kitten's food rather than his own. Also, he had accidentally been locked in a room for a few hours a couple days ago and possibly was "holding it" and became backed up.
The vet gave him an enema and sent us home w/lactulose.
It is now about 12 hours later and my cat is still not feeling well and keeps trying to vomit, though nothing is coming out. Is it normal for him to feel nauseaus for awhile? Should I take him back in right away? Or is there something I can give him to help the nausea?

The enema removed some of the impacted stool but not all of it. The lactulose should help keep the stool softer so that it will move through the intestines faster. Once your cat is having normal stools, put him on a meat and bone diet, along with cod liver oil and a probiotic daily. If he doesn't have a stool in another 24 hours, I usually give a capsule of cascara sagrada mixed with food to stimulate the intestines.

Thanx! I will try the new diet. What exactly is the meat & bone diet?
Also, my cat (Floyd) is still not himself and he gags quite a bit. Sometimes just a little bit of clear liquid comes out, but rarely anything. It's almost like his throat has something stuck in it. However, the x-ray did not show anything. He eats very little of his soft food (I add the lactulose and a little bit of water to this). What could be causing the gagging? Could he become dehydrated?
Fortunately he does eat a little bit, and he urinated once and had one loose stool today.
