baby deremensis feeding ???'s

1086i May 28, 2003 09:56 AM

I'm hopefully about 3 weeks away from having 31 deremensis eggs start to hatch. I've raised many clutches of panthers and weiders, but this is the first time for deremensis. Was wondering if the preferred first food is fruitflies and pinheads, or if the babies are large enough to start on #2 crickets? The eggs are huge, so I'm assuming the babies will be larger than panthers? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you still working with the Chamaeleo weidershemi?

Unfortunately I haven't had weiders for almost a year. They are very cool little chams, and I hope to work with them more in the future.

Even if the babies are larger than panthers at hatching (and I'm not sure they are...eggs shrink a bit before they hatch I think) they will probably still prefer fruitflies and pinheads. Smaller prey is easier to digest and they will get better nutrition out of more small insects than fewer large ones. The ratio of gutload and dust to insect exoskeleton is higher for smaller prey. Good luck! Baby deremensis are adorable and bright electric blue. I don't usually like fiddling with natural color phases just for effect, but if someone was to breed a deremensis that kept its baby color it would be amazing.
