Brazilian Horned Frog - Aurita

needaurita Oct 14, 2003 07:25 PM

Hey all. I am interested in aurita, but cannot find one, and am starting to wonder if they are illegal or cannot be imported. Are there importation laws against them?

Also, I have a 10-gallon with Bed-a-Beast substrate, will this be fine until he gets too big? How fast does he grow?

In addition, do any of you guys feed your frogs superworms? I know that they can burrow out of the stomach if not killed before hand, but if I do kill them should they be fine? Thanks a lot and if anyone knows where I could find aurita I would appreciate it.

Aurita are from the Rio du Sol region of Brazil. Brazil has very strict laws regarding the taking of their native species. A couple float through every year and I remember hearing r.r. from gherp was going to try to attain a legal breeding pair, but chances are slim. All of the ones I know of were adults. I know of about 7 that were imported, 6 in one group, 1 seperately. HIGHLY unlikely you will find any in the close future. If you are looking for cool horned frogs, after you get some experience go for cornuta. Fun guys. 10 gallon is probably too small for any aurita as well...most imports are adults if you happen to find one. As for superworms, I have never had a problem with feeding them live. I never believed all of the rumors. You can pinch the mouthparts if you want, but they don't make all that great of a food source anyway. The chiton can build up in the stomach. Hissing cockroaches are great, as are crickets and nightcrawlers. Remember...no vertebrates (IMO...some people will say vertebrates are ok, but I have seen the effects and choose to forgo the rodent/fish diet). Good luck. If you have any questions you can email or IM me on surfandskimtx04 or go to my reptizone site. Andy

Wow great information thanks snakeguy! I want to get a cornuta, but don't know where to get them from . In pac man frogs, are the females larger? I am going for potential size here, and I know aurita is the largest. Since that is out of the question, what would be next? Also, another option I had in mind was the orata x cranwelli (the book shows a bluish one, but I am not sure if this is always the case).

I also cannot find a good resorce for horned frog info on the net, any ideas? Thanks for the help!

You can get baby cornutas at mascarino.com I was gonna order them there but they hadn't had them breed at the time I was looking. And the hybrids they show are always the prettiest ones, they don't always look so bright.

Female aurita can hit 8 inches. They are the most sought after horned frog species, I believe. Everyone wants one lol. I searched for years but I have given up for now. That's how I found out about the other 7 potentially still here. If you want size, try an african bullfrog. The next largest horned frog would be any of the common species, the cranwelli and the ornata. The cornuta do not get large, but they are among the most beautiful. Not easy to keep in most cases, but still very nice. The hybrids can attain good sizes (most are cranwelli x corunta) but I am very anti-hyrbid, so I do not advocate going that way (the frogs were created using LRH hormone which will kill the breeders at an earlier age...just for the purpose of people wanting "cool" frogs).
