REDNESS on a leopard frog

anymaaluver Oct 14, 2003 08:53 PM

hi, i have 3 adult leopard frogs, 2 similar looking (im assuming the males) and 1 larger, lighter-colored one with a more irregular spot pattern (im assuming the female). i've just recently noticed that the bottom rear area of the largest one (the "female" is tinged redish-pink, and is a noticeable difference from the others, which i checked after seeing it on her. my question is: what's wrong with her, if anything? her only recent behavioral differences are that she sits apart from the others more now, and isnt as active. is she sick, pregnant, or anything? please email me or respond here with ANY information asap. thanx, and please help!

p.s. i dont know if these even qualify as aquatic frogs but please help anyway if you can!

What does the reddish area look like? (for example a hickey) Is she still eating? How dramatic has the change in her activity been?

yes, the redness reminds me of a hickey, or "settled blood" in a way, since it's at her back end and fades off to her thighs. she is still eating some, but they only ate greedily when they were younger, so it's hard to tell how much less she may be eating. and her behavioral changes are different just in that shes staying out from under the rock that all 3 usually huddle under, and instead sticks to one corner at the front of the tank. she's also not as ansy when i approach the cage, and she doesnt struggle AS much when i handle her. also, she's always been lighter in color than the others, though i guess she COULD be a shade paler, if that makes a difference.

Well I would try to get the frog to a vet ASAP. It sounds like it could be red leg.

this may be a dumb question, but what is "red leg"? i have many pets and probably cant afford to pay for any major treatment, so if you could let me know exactly what im looking at (assuming she has that) that would be very helpful. thanx again.

Red leg is a fatal amphibian disease believed to be caused by a bacteria. Try doing a google search for "redleg disease".

You should seperate her from the other frogs too.
