Thanks for posting the photos! Male calicos are supposedly very rare and people will tell you they are all sterile but I've always wondered why someone doesn't check it out for sure. Actually, this is the second male I've heard of in the last few months! Glad you rescued this good-looking guy and hope you share many years together. Katc

Not only a male kaliko, but a Van-patterned kitty too
(The van pattern is when they have color only on the head and tail)

hey guys,
I'm not really into cats, but i like calicos and i love genetics. I did some research on the web last night. Male calicos can be caused by several different disorders that affect either skin or chromosomes. Some actually are fertile, but will not produce calico. this is caused by a chimera, a cat who is really 2 cats genetically. his dna is xy/xy some patches are from one "self" and the second color from another self. Wheather they produce red or black depends on wich self thier testicles are from. There is a reproducing male maine coon right now on the show circuit who is registered but unshowable because there are no classes for him. he is a true red(not dilute) and gray. His name is pretty boy floid. and theres a pic in internet land somewhere from the maine coon national. its also interesting that the gender difference also extends to tortiseshells, the white is controlled by a totally seperate gene that also cause bicolors.
