My male calico

madjack7 Jul 27, 2004 09:37 PM

Hello all,
My male calico who is a little more than a year old.
See post

He doesnt want to use the litter box that the rest of the cats use. He goes on the floor right next to the box.
Anyone familiar with this problem or have any suggestions?
I dont know what to do , I love him but I cant take this anymore.

Thanks,
Chris

He is very beautiful! You said he was a stray, he's probably not used to using a community bathroom. I would suggest confining him to a small room, all by himself with his own litterbox for a while. Don't allow the other cats to use this box. See if he can get used to going IN the box, if no one else is using it. If he does, then you can try getting him to use the community litter boxes. You should also clean the area's he has pottied on with an ensyme cleaner you can buy at a pet store. Is he neutered? Even though they say male calicos are sterile, he could still spray.
I hope it all works out!

Yes he has been to the vet and is up to date with shots and also neutered. He has been doing this off and on for the past year.
He was a stray but he has adjusted very well, he is the dominant male cat.
He will use the litter box for a few months then he goes on the floor for a few weeks. He usually goes in the middle of the night when we are all asleep. Last night I placed him in the litter box and told him how good he was and he went right away.
This morning all was good, no surprise on the floor.

Wow, how old was he when you found him? Could it be possible that he's simply become accustomed to marking his territory and does it out of habit?

I dont htink he is marking.
He was only 2 to 3 months old when I got him.
He was just a kitten.

Some cats like to have their own litter box. The recommendations in multi cat families is one box per cat and one extra. We have 6 boxes in our basement. We have five cats.

I agree that some cats like to have their own litter box. They also like a clean litter box. Some are even picky about what kind of litter. And yet there are some cats that get blatter infections in which case they can't make it to the box in time end of peeing right in front of you, on the bed, couch, carpet, even right next to the litter box. I have a female cat that gets a bladder infection once in a while and we have to treat her for it. Poor thing. I have three cats and three litter boxes.
