calico genetics

mariaricardo Mar 15, 2006 05:13 AM

My Tortie queen has had a litter with a non tortie or calico female kitten. The kitten is a black and white female. I thought all female kittens from a tortie or calico mother would be tortie or calico. Can anyone steer me to a site with the genetics of calicos explained? Is this a recessive gene?

Howdy Franci,
That link is a good one but doesn't answer my question. I emailed the author of the article but it was returned. Why did my tortie queen have a non tortie or calico female kitten? I didn't think it was possible.

Well , Im not a genticist, but Im sure the father would have something to do with it. So far as I know just because the queen is a tortie or calico, dosent mean all the kittens will be, just as a none tortie or calico can have calico or tortie offspring. Sometimes the red gene just isnt there...Ill mention your question to some of the other hosts, maybe they can give you a answer...
