Feral Calico I took in

brd Mar 20, 2010 11:11 PM

A little over a year ago we took in a calico cat that had been living in my shed. She was not full grown at the time and has at least doubled in weight since we took her in. Once we got her we took het to the vet, that was not plesent. You could not touch her. We had to bring her back the next morning because they said they had to medicate het just to look at her. She was pretty mean. It took a couple of months talking to her in the room we put her in for quarantine. We had to do that because she had worms and we just couldn't get close to her to put the pills in her mouth.

When she was living outside and feral she would come to the front door and try to come in, so I started feeding her. I could pet her to some degree even. When I caught her I had an animal carrier already by the door so when she came around I grabbed her and put her inside the carrier. She did not like that.

Her left ear is missing about half of it. She was even fixed when we got her. The vet said sometimes cats are caught, fixed, and released back out and they cut off part of the ear so they know it was fixed. She did know what a litter box was though.

Any way, I think she has it made now. Here are some pics of her now, making herself at home. She has turned out to be a pretty good cat. What do you think?

I think she is beautiful and looks quite at home. I am sure she is grateful that you saved her.

Thanks. We are happy with the way she has turned out. This is the second feral cat I have taken in, the first was back in 1993. Now we have four cats. Here are a couple pics I took today. For some reason she likes to be on the cable box.

I have a couple who like the cable box too. I think it is warm. At least yours is nice and keeps her tail out of the way. Both of mine seem to find it amusing to drape their tail over the little eye thingy so that my remote doesn't work. I have 20 cats and one dog and all are rescues or former ferals.

Wow, that is a lot of cats. A friend of mine who has several acres has at least 50 cats she feeds. she's always asking me if I want another cat.

Back in 1993, I believe I took in my first feral cat. At that point in my life I had never even owned a cat. A female cat had a litter out behind the building in a small wooded area. I had heard from one of the security guards that they were abuse by one of the truck drivers. The first time I saw the cat I took in he was really small. After a couple of months, he would start coming around every day when we had our dinner break. He knew what time it was, we would sit out on the loading dock and sure enough he would come around. You couldn't get close to him, if you got within 20 feet he would run. We started throwing food out to him and he would eat. If we threw food in the garbage can, he would climb in it after we went back in. One day, I brought a Have A Heart live animal trap to work, because about a week before I started feeding him canned cat food, and I would place it about 30 feet from where we sat. So I put the can of food in the trap and he circled around it, and finally he went in. Then the trap door closed. We thought he was going to kill himself trying to get out. So after work I had to go by a litter box and all that stuff. When I let him out he went and hid. Then he was a little terror. He didn't know what a litter box was, so he went to the bathroom wherever he wanted. He was knocking dishes of the counter on to the floor breaking them. He was terrified of people. I called a vet for advise on what to do. So I saw him in the spare bathroom and I ran over and closed the door. He stayed in there for a week and I would go in and feed him and spend some time with him. Finally I could touch him and pick him up. Throughout his life he would never allow anyone else to pet him. But when it came to me, he was my baby. He followed me everywhere I went. He sat by the door when I would come home. He would always come when I called his name. Every night he would jump up on my chest and tuck me in. He was an amazing animal, and I will miss him until the day I die. He died on 12-11-06, he was around 14 years old. Here are a couple pics of him. When he died, I cried for 7 days, at home, while driving, at work, or wherever, very painful loss. At the time he died I was a 40 year old man. I have never cried like that over anything. If I told you about all the great things about him, I would be typing forever. Here are a couple of pics.

Oh, he was a beautiful boy and it sounds like you gave him a wonderful life too. Many of mine are not fond of strangers but will warm up if someone is here for a while. Especially if they have food and might share some.
