Cham making high-pictched noises

Downtown Oct 14, 2003 11:14 PM

Alright, I just bought a CB 2-month-old baby veiled chameleon last week and is my first chameleon but I have all the right nessecities and did my research(heat, UV, mesh cage, Rep-Cal dust, auto-mister,...)
Sometimes when I enter the room she'll come out of hiding, go to the top of the sticks, and rarely hiss. She seems to be getting friendlier by the day.
I tend to talk or make noises to her but learned they have no ears. I still do it anyways. When I do this and hold her close to me, she likes to crawl to my face.

Sometimes when I entered the room she would look at me and open its mouth, making a chirping noise- a high-pitched squeek, almost like that of the sound of a kitten's meow. I am not joking. I know when she is hissing because the skin underneath her jaw expands and she tries to look bigger. When she chirps, she stands normally, with normal green colors.

This morning, I was holding her and making little noises to her. She made this same chirping noise to me 4 times within 15 minutes on my hand. I'm sure she only does this in my presence when she's looking at me or facing my direction.

Is she trying to communicate or something bizarre? Or does she have some sort of respiratory problem?
I've only had Chammie for a week but she looks healthy and is eating normally. She even ate in front of me the second day I had her. When she chirps I don't think there's any fungus in her mouth or anything else.

Either I have hell of a/one of a kind chameleon or there is something very wrong with her.

Please reply and thanks

Actually, this is not that uncommon.
We have been raising veiled for a few years. Currently, we have approx 140 veiled babies from 1week to 10 weeks of age (several clutches), and I hear them "chirping" quite often. They will eventually grow out of it - and then just hiss.

Hope this helps,

Hi Adam,

Yes... got lots of little mouths to feed.
We also have flapnecks and panthers hatching - and a few new jacksons have been born too. All these adorable little faces!

We have been getting ready for the show in Hillsboro too, hope to see you there. We will have some veiled, jacksons and panthers - along with some other herps. Look for us in the first booth - at the reptile room entrance.

Got your cresteds, eh?
Take good care,
