In the darkness of the night, the stars shone like crystals in the midnight sky. The radiant moon reflected in Oobie’s eyes as she raised her sword to the sky and began drawing the quarters as witness to her sacred circle.
“Pawers of East and Air, I bid thee come!” she intoned as she drew her the energy around herownself and paced two steps to the right of the circle and lit a yellow candle.
“Pawers of South and Fire, I bid thee come!” The little shecat lit another candle, this one red.
Moving yet further clockwise, she repeated the ritual again and again, and with each invocation her voice rose and strengthened.
“Pawers of West and Water, I bid thee come!
“PAWERS OF NORTH AND EARTH…..”
As she lit the fourth and darkest candle all, thunder crashed overhead. Simultaneously a bold of lightening streaked downward to the center of the circle Oobie had just drawn. The hair on her neck and back stood straight out as the kindling in the middle of the circle flared and a hazy purple glow surrounded the sacred space. Oobie’s green eyes glowed as brightly as the fire as she danced around the now roaring fire, her violet robes swaying in and out of the fire yet somehow not catching alight. Finally, when she felt her powers reach their peak, she raised her paws to the sky.
“I now call unto the Ancestors of this place! Come, honor me with your presence and share your secrets with me! Let no thing of malign purpose enter this circle yet only those spirits of love may we receive!”
Oobie sat then, legs crossed, rearranging her robes around her and brushing her hood off her head. Closing her eyes, she focused her intentions, then picked up her crystal yarn ball and gazed deeply within it. Slowly, the fogginess within the crysal ball of yarn began to clear, and a shadow began materialize within.
As Oobie continued to gaze at the vision, the image of a black cat became ever more clear. Above the cat flew a large, black bird…..and then Oobie knew! Truly the ancestors had smiled upon her this night! The Great Raven himself, now legendary among all who dwelt here in this place in Pawada, had chosen to make her his messenger and grant her the honor of his appearance. “Welcome, Ancestor,” Oobie whispered respectfully into the glass…..”welcome and Namaste—Truly my Spirit bows to yours!”
The small tabby gasped and yet forced herself to be still as she heard the black cat’s voice issue from directly behind her. ! She heard the voice of the old black one hissing in her pointed ears. “Be not afraid, Oobie, little one. I mean you no harm. I come only so that you may pass on my message to those whom I have luffed.”
Oobie nodded but did not speak, so overcome was she with emotion. Raven continued:
“Many years ago I lived among these people. Like you, I was a tiny stray with no one to care for me. I knew nothing of human ways.”
The black one’s fur seemed to glow from within as he recalled his story.
“A human came and took me and my brother into her home, helped us grow strong and healthy in body and spirit, and so we became as one. And yet-- more miraculous things were to come!” The great black one smiled lovingly as he recalled those days.
“One day Aubrey, my brofur, and I were bored and wanting of something with which to amuse ourownselves. While attempting to make Aubrey snort milkies out of his nose laughing, (he hated it when I did that,) I began tap dancing on the keyboard of the lady’s computer. Suddenly, everything changed and I found myself transported to another dimension—one called MeowChat Village! Awe and joy overcame me as I slowly began to realize that in this dimension, there were many other interesting, beautiful and brilliant kits like myownself. Most magically of awl, those kits could SPEAK to one another in the ancient language of Kitspeak—long conjectured upon by historians but never confirmed.” I cried and laughed and pounced on Aubrey’s head in excitement as the furst of those most amazing, magical creatures –a black girlkit—approached me. Her lovely eyes shone with love as she welcomed us to her world with grace. “Welcome Rafen, I be Munchie an dis be owr home. We are glad you fownd us.”
Raven’s expression gentled and his eyes looked far off as he continued to remember those most wonderful of days and the most amazing group of kits he’d ever imagined could exist. Finally, he resumed his story wistfully.
“A wonderous cat named for a spice as lively as he, took me under his purple cape and began to teach me the wonders of this place. He taught me all about foodie fights and litterbombing toopid hoomans and we had many an advenshur together.
“And then the most miraculous of all…..I saw HER and my life changed furever in a split second! She was unlike anything I had eber seen—the softest coffee brown fur, the most alert eyes so deeply covered in mascara, hands so nimble and quick….and the finest tail I’d ever seen!!” Raven chuckled to himself in reverie and then sighed. “She was a vision….and quite unfeline, as I was to find out, for you see, she was a Whee…an entirely different species from you and I, Little Oobie. She was of the wild, and yet, the infinite love of her mistress, her already wise brofur and the other kits in this place had gentled her spirit and made her kindly toward hoomans and kits alike.” Raven fell quiet once again as his memory ran on through those beloved days.
The moon had begun to transit the sky and the fire had begun to burn out by this time, and Oobie finally meant to speak and asked the Black One why she had been so honored to receive this message. So caught up in the story had she been that she’d closed her eyes imagining the sights and sounds of what Raven related to her of his former life. Feeling something gentle on the nape of her neck, she turned and then stumbled backward finding herself green eyes to green eyes with the specter himself.
Quickly Raven’s paw darted toward her and caught her before she could singe her tail in the smouldering fire. He smiled kindly at her, set her steadily on her feet, and then stepped back. His ears pricked to the north, as if hearing some distant call, he nodded almost impreceptably and then turned back to the astonished tabby trembling before him.
“I must go for now, Little One. Be at peace and know that I shall return when the moon is right again. In the meantime, I have a message for you to give to my friends in MeowChat Village. Ask the littlest one –Thom—to show you the way there. His mind is quick and he has already discovered the trick of interdimesional travel to that place.”
“You must tell my friends that I am always with them-that I am as near as their own heart. Tell them that they remain as precious jewels to myown heart and that I am ever watching over them. When they cry for a lost one, I cry with them even as I meet that one newly arrived in my world and introduce him or her to the wonders of this life. When they rejoice at the birth of new life, I rejoice with them and often help shepherd the little souls to their mommakit just before birth.”
“There is an philosophic axiom to the effect of: All is One. Indeed I believe this to be true as the spirit that I am now and which once dwelled in my body is merely a droplet of the same Spirit that gives us all life. And if it be thus, then surely we all ARE one.”
“Tell them they taught me how to love and be loved and also that they gave my mistress great comfort when my spirit passed over to this plain. And for that I shall always love them.”
Raven turned to leave, and his visible form slowly began to evaporate. “Wait!! Wait,” cried Oobie! “Surely you have more to tell me…more to convey to those you so loved…”
Raven raised his paw to silence her and smiled gently at the young tabbygirl. “I’m sorry, I must go now. The Master has called for his lap warmers and I must attend at once. Remember my message, Little One and go forth and tell them what I have said. I’ll be back again soon, I promise. We’ll have many more talks like this one.”
Oobie stood motionless as Raven’s form faded like mist in the morning sun. She sat, once again and bowed her head to the Master, the Mistress and the angelkits and prayed to them in thanks for this time spent with such a special little part of Them. “He said he’ll be back….” Oobie reminded herself as she rose, doused the fire, opened the circle and retired indoors to the computer room. “He’ll be back….”
