looking for a temporary enclosure for my older dragon...

louiec Oct 15, 2003 12:53 AM

I have read hear b4 that many recommend I believe it was a Rubbermaid tub (correct me if I am wrong)...

Anyway... What tub was it again and what size?? I want it to be able to house a full grown beardie. Also what are some places I can be sure to purchase this tub (walmart?.. etc etc)

I need it to also be able to stand the heat that a T-REX UV/HEAT (100w) lamp will put out (last thing I need is my poor beardies enclosure melting... lol).

In case you need to know I will be using paper towels as a substrate.

I'd like to move on from using his current enclosure (a glass tank) and get him into a melamine cage... but until I save up... a tub will do (much lighter and easier to clean)

thanks in advance

I went into lowes last night and actually saw the biggest Rubbermaid tub I've ever seen. If you have a lowes by you check it out. I'm sorry but I didn't even think to take a look at how many qt. or gal. it held, but it was perfect for an adult. Wal-mart does carry them and I've used them from wal-mart just this one at lowes was even bigger. The one I got at wal-mart held 40 gallons. The ones at lowes must have been atleast 65-75 gallon. Look around but in a pinch I've used the 40's from walmart. I also use mvb just make sure he gets the right temps and proper gradient. As long as you keep the bulb from touching the plastic I doubt you will have a problem with them melting especially since a basking spot should only be around 105. If you have a Lowes or home depot you might be able to find these huge ones I've seen there. Good luck

I actually have both right near me...

now are the rubbermaid tubs (both the one from Lowes and the one from Walmart that you speak of)high or low?? just curious... I guess its all a matter of perferance huh...

now I have another question... what did you sit the UV/heat bulbs on?? or did u hang it on a rope (or something)

thanks again... just trying to get some ideas...

I had to get the high ones cause if they were low the dragons would be able to jump out.

Depending on if your light has a clamp you could just clamp it and angle it towards the basking spot. If you have no clamp on the fixture I guess you could pick up a window screen so you can place the lights on top.

I only used the tubs for an egg laying site, so really I just needed to heat up the soil mixture and aas soon as she was done that was it. I packed them away.

The one I saw at lowes was about 4 feet long and about 20 inches high.

I had the same concern, but quickly realized that it takes quite a bit to melt those tubs.

My guys are lucky though. I let them run around my apartment in the evenings. They actually follow me around like a cat would.
They ARE living the perfect life.
