Walnut shells and pyro death

How long would it take for a pyro to die after it has taken in walnut shells? I just recently sold a healthy adult pyro to someone and it mysteriously died. He was keeping it on walnut shells for just a couple days. We're trying to figure out how this death could have occured. Do you think the walnut shells could have done it? Thanks
