popping

jsmallwood Oct 15, 2003 08:21 AM

i recently noticed that my bp every now and then makes a popping sound when he exhales. i believe this is a respiratory infection. What could i do to possibly get rid of it, without having to take him to a vet? And also i have a 55 gal. with 1 dome light, and 2 hooded lights, a plexi glass top(with holes) and a big heat rock that is covered with a sock, the temperatures will not rise above 80 during the day and 70-75 at night. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on possible solutions? thanks.

this isnt related to the "popping" sound... but get that heat rock out of the tank. Even with the sock you still run the risk of it cracking and causing a fire, or the snake getting burned. Use a UTH instead... much safer.

1. Remove the heat rock. Pronto.
2. Increase the temp. The hot side should be 90-94. NOT 80.
3. Remove the heat rock. Pronto.
Use either a UTH, or a human heat pad.

These are all things that you should have factored in BEFORE you bought your ball, and not after. Seems the only thing suffering from your ignorance is the snake. My advice, find a responsible owner for the snake.

It sounds like it probably is suffering from a resp inf from the low temps. Personally, I think a 55 gallon aquarium is too big. It is too hard to heat properly, and too hard to maintain humidity. I would suggest putting your critter in a 28 qt or 42 qt Rubbermaid/Sterilite with a lid secured on it until it is well, and you have either figured out how to maintain temps, or get another cage. Put a human heat pad under one end of it, set to medium, and put a small water dish on the cool end, as well as a hide on each end. Make sure you drill or melt ventilation holes in the sides. Rubbermaids/Sterilites are available at Walmart, Target, etc, as are human heat pads. $20 or so should get it done.
You don't need to get rid of the snake, as someone suggested, just find a more effective way to provide it with what it needs to stay healthy.

Email me if you have questions.
