Feeding Finicky Frogs!

silvrstar7 Oct 15, 2003 12:29 PM

I have a beautiful pair of RE Tree Frogs, and the only problem I have with them is that they will ONLY eat crickets! (Plus an occasional fly I toss in there, but I don't like to do that--flies are so dirty!) I have tried other worms, etc. but they don't touch them until they escape and change into beetles/moths in my tank! (Is that ok? Mealworm beetles have such tough exoskeletons...) I'm worried that this is not nutritionally sound for them, and if anyone has any ideas for getting them to eat new foods, I'd really appreciate it.

Have you tried feeding small hissing cockroaches or moths? When I want to mix up my white's diet those are what I feed.

Feeding them only crickets isn't really a problem as long as you are using a good calcium/vitamin dust.....and you can currently buy houseflies (non dirty because they are farm raised) from a number of places one place in particular is americancricketranch.com..the only problem with flies is they don't live all that long.

I haven't tried moths. I think the cockroaches are a bit much for my boys to handle. I'll get some waxworms and let them change to moths, and see if they'll eat those. I do use a good calcium suppliment, plus I feed the crickets fruits and veggies. (I only use the suppliment once in a while though, as too much can be harmful.) Thanks for the ideas!

If the frogs are growing, use the supplement regularly... like every other feeding. The problem is more with D3 if it's in there, but as long as the frogs are still growing they will use all that calcium.

Also, gut-load crix well. Mixed veggies are good, but I like to add vitamins just to make sure it's well-balanced. Just be careful what you use. Also, watch for the phosphorus to calcium ratio because that'll also be a problem.

I can get small 1/2 to 3/4 inch roached from my local pet store if I ask for them.

Actually, as long as you are dusting the crickets with a vitamin and calcium suppliment and feeding them a good diet... crickets alone is fine. The crickets them selves don't really have any nutritional value, its more what you feed them and dust them with that is benificial for the frogs.
