Borneo vs. Sumatran

Blue_Fox Oct 15, 2003 12:32 PM

I've read the basic differences between the two, but haven't been able to find a side-by-side comparison: Which, in the opinions of all of you experienced keepers out there, is the most docile (perhaps even friendly, with enough handling?) of the P. Curtus species? Which is heftier -- I know the Sumatrans grow longer, but it looked to me from the pictures I've seen that the Borneos are heavier-bodied -- was that just a conincidence?

I'm planning on purchasing a CB baby some time in the next year or so and am trying to find out ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I can beforehand... Finding this forum was a huge help, so a general thanks is extended to all you experienced keepers who are so willing to offer your help to all of us novices!!

But yes, any information regarding the differences between Borneos and Sumatrans would be appreciated... Also: is there a marked temperment difference between males and females? I prefer male snakes, but I'd much rather have one that is as docile as possible...

Thanks again,

A. Fox

Hey,
If you read the thread just below this one you might glean some thing from it (as some of the same basic questions were addressed" ), and it might help to answer a couple of your questions. I don't know if you are refering to the Sumatran Red Bloods, or the Sumatran short-tail of which the latter is known for not only being the smallest of the former group or Curtus complex, but also, known for its placid demeanor.

Males of the Malaysian or Northen Sumatran Red Bloods, have been known to be a little more irascible than the other taxon of short-tail pythons (particularly males of Malaysian origin) and more prone to be fiestier than their female counter parts. Hope that helps! Angel

Thanks, Angel -- actually I wasn't really sure which snakes I was comparing because I haven't found an exact taxonomic delineation of the P. Curtus genus. I'll run a search of this forum -- I seem to remember an old post in that vein -- but if anyone knows of a website that has a detailed description of P. Curtus taxonomy, that would be ideal...

Thanks,

A. Fox
