Ferris' Progress Report

kittymama14 Feb 01, 2012 05:56 PM

Ferris has been making baby steps, progressing slowly.....but I am seeing each baby step as a major victory. I have been feeding him with a syringe...and will continue until I am sure he is eating well and drinking. today he continued to open his mouth ever so slightly when I fed him....as opposed to clamping it shut when I give him meds. I have yet to see him eating his food, but i went out and got some sliced chicken, gave him a little and he gobbled it right down. When I put fresh water in his cage he drank a tiny bit. he has also eaten a few treats with great enthusiasm. At this point I will feed him just about anything he eats enthusiastically. I got a couple jars of baby food (chicken) and some of those cartons of cat milk, hoping to get more fluids into him that way

Today he seems to be sitting up a little more steadily....less wobbling. I have also seen him take a couple of steps before falling over...which I did not see, yesterday. Today I found one very small and very soft poop in his LB. That was major because it means he was able to get into and out of the LB on his own! I am confident that he will continue to progress...with all the glows from all of you....how could he not?!

Dis is Sparkle's Mommy -- I don't know Ferris' back story, but I had a cat that had no appetite after surgery and I had good luck with Beechnut baby food (pure chicken and water) and the vet gave me Science Diet AD, which he was crazy about. Science Diet AD is specifically made to help sick cats -- nutrient packed and very tasty to them. Easy to make a slurry out of it for the syringe with water.

I had to syringe fed him every few hours for a few days.

One thing that really helped him over the hump to eat on his own is the vet prescribed "Cyproheptadine" as an appetite stimulant. A white tablet pill that you can cut to lessen dosage as time progresses. It really helped him gain interest in food.

Poop in the box is VERY encouraging! Good news!

Ferris has vestibular disease and suddenly couldn't walk. He is on A/D with a syringe, but I am trying to encourage him to eat on his own, so I am supplementing with all the things I know he loves...like baby food. The vet feels that the dizziness is the reason he is having no appetite and he is on medication for that. Tonight I saw him take 5 steps before falling over! That is wonderful progress from yesterday when he couldn't even stand up without falling over! Thank you for all your suggestions

Dis is Sparkle's Mommy -- Are they absolutely certain it is vestibular disease? I ask because Stanley had dizziness, etc., and they initially thought that, but it wound up being a brain tumor. Scary words, but was actually controlled quite well with a low dose of steroids that stopped the dizziness. He ultimately passed away from Kidney failure. We were able to control the dizziness with low steroids (prednisolone not prednisone, predinsolone has a better affect on cats) for a couple years.

Something to maybe ask -- unless they are certain it is vestibular disease.
