Breeding season aggression???

bobl Oct 15, 2003 02:09 PM

Have any of breeders here ever noticed a change in their Drys temperment during the breeding season from normally docile to defensive or aggressive?

Thanks
Bobby

Bobby,

YES,I have noticed a MARKED diffrence in temperment dureing the onset of breeding season. Especially in my all black female couperi("Lincoln" who now resides proudly in Rob Carmichaels collection. Normally she is REALLY fiesty, but during breeding season if you so much as touch her she will try her best to nail you. Maybe its the unwanted overtures of the males I linked her up with? I dunno. I have noticed this in several female couperi during this time of the year. And FEEDING more food didnt augment it or reduce it. Go figure. And I thought food was their sedative. AFTER theyve eaten of course..(Laughs out loud)

*Cheers*

LOL @ Fred..must admit my female is very agitated at the moment like you said only have to touch her and the tail starts and she flys round as though its dinner time.!!Even an extra feed didn't subdue her but still love em and it'll pass i hope.

First year I have had indigos but funny now that you mention it i have noticed my pair have become alot more defensive and skittish when i get them out..they are both 3 1/2 years old.

Thanks for the responses guys. Hopefully their attitudes are a sign of things to come! (More little YT's perhaps!!!)
I can't take it!!!!!!!!! LOL

when the males start chasing the girls around in the fall, they are a little edgy towards anything that moves and don't ask a whole lot of questions. watch your fingers!..........

i was referring to the males. they're the scary ones! LOL!! my bad, sorry.......

Although I have seen a personality change during the breeding season, it has never been so bad where I wonder what has happened to my couperi's docile personalities. The females are a little more restless (probably as Dan mentioned, due to the male's advances which can be quite physical) and the males seem to pursue anything that moves or touches them. Males are a lot of fun during this period! Fred, thanks for the warning on Lincoln!

My male YT is now super aggressive to the point where I have to hook him and the female is just wary, but still handleable.
He wasn't like that before so I'm thinking he doesn't want to be bothered. Man is he aggressive!!!!

Come to think of it, he was aggressive the first time I bred him, but he was in a top cage and I really never saw him unless I got up on a step ladder to see what what going on up there.
He's now in a mid level cage and we see each other when ever I go into the herp room.

I spoke too soon in my original post. It looks like the male red chin male I received from Fred is in FULL BREEDING MODE. Today, he shed and when I opened his cage to take the old shed out, he shot out and literally came at me for approx. 6' (reminds me of my monocled cobra!)...definitely got the 40 year old ticker pumping. It looks like I will be introducing his girlfriend this weekend as she, too, has become very restless. Love is in the air!

Our big Tex, Shad (Shadrack Meshack, the Indigo) has been plowing up the newspaper substrate of late. S/he is just shy of 6', we think about 3 yrs old.

I bought him as a male, but we have not had him sexed. Jeff keeps saying that there is no keeling and we could have a female.

The other sexually mature animals in the room include a male and female yellow tail. Plenty of pheromones in the air, I'm certain.
