Finally got some cash - Any suggestions on who and what type?

ttreptile1 May 28, 2003 12:19 PM

I am looking for a "pet" chondro for my son and I to care for and as a display animal. I want to spend around $300 if possible. I am very familiar with ATBs and have bred them in the past and have read up on Chondros allot since then. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to buy from and what is a good locale for pet quality. I know they don't relish handling and thats fine. More or less to care for it with my son and teach him the fine art of good husbandry. We would also have him in an acrylic display cage in our living room. I have heard Aru locale GTPs don't get quite as large. Any suggestions would be great!

Here is a pic of its home. Heat panel was jsut installed .-

Difficult question that is bound to stir up some controversy...Starting with the easy question, there is not enough difference in size between the different types that it should become a factor in the decision. Temperament seems to be variable regardless on the type also. Sarong and Aru have the reputation of being a bit nicer than Biak but from reading all the posts from other people, I am not sure if their reputation (or lack of) is justified...my biak is certainly as nice as I can expect it to be...it really seems to be an individual thing rather than a "species" characteristic. If you get a yearling or an adult you might be able to predict his character a bit better than with a baby. The price that you intend to put in will not get you very far. For that price the only thing you'll get is probably a wild caught , non established baby from an unknown seller. That does not mean that sometimes you cannot get lucky or that he will necessarily die but the odds are certainly not in your favour. If you want captive bred, established baby you will have to put in more money...especially if you get a yearling. I would expect $500 and up...
My 2 cents...

Thanks for the info. I am sure it will stir people up, didn't mean it to stir any flame wars. I have hooked up with a very nice gentlemen in FL and am working a deal as we speak. I am looking at a Sorong locale yearling. Thanks again.

Forgot, its captive bred 02 and is the Tampa Bay Snake Pit. Wish me luck! I am very siked about getting it. All these years of ATBs and finally getting to move up to the big boys (or just slightly chubbier green boys).

A quick note, that is a LOVELY set up for your new gtp, but it is pretty large for a baby as young as the one you are looking at.

I have an sweet biak type adult male that is approx. 5 years old, healthy as you can find anywhere and would make an excellent first chondro as he is trouble free as can be. Good home is important to me ..... if the other one doesn't come together and you are interested let me know.

Will keep that in mind. How much are you sellin him for and do you have any pics? If you do, post them here or e-mail them to me at ttreptile1@msn.com. That cage is in my livingroom now and is jam packed with live and silk plants to make it more secure and has many vertical branches for thermo reg. Should work out nice. Thanks!

I forgot to tell you to check out the Chondroweb... it's a website completely dedicated to chondros. The site has some great forums and also a classified section where I believe there are a few nice animals being advertised right now at pretty reasonable prices.

If you want a baby aru type greentree, get in touch with Jay Eaton (think that's his last name) at exotic jungle. His site is exoticjungle.net. He has some beautiful baby arus for $350. I have one, and it eats great and is an awesome animal. He has pics of the parents as well. VERY nice captive bred animals. Good luck in your search, and if you have more questions, then feel free to get in touch.

I researched the subject a bit myself as well. I also asked for his side of the story. Came to the conclusion that the gentlemen is fine and has provided top notch service to me so far. As I said to him, the final product I receive will be the proof. He also has a very good guarentee and many many references. I have also contacted a couple of them and they have said the same. Contact with him has been super easy and his responses have been even faster. To this point, he has been as good or better than many of the known ATBN dealers I am used to working with.

I was just wondering if you could post a pic of the (sorong) that you purchased? I just looked through his website and he has several biaks pictured under different locality names.

I get the snake on Tuesday and will post a pic then. The one of mine has now been removed I guess cuz it was sold. I really hope this all comes out ok. I am like an expecting parent today! Although all the negative comments about this guy is really working on my nerves. At this point (mistake or not) my whole concern is safe shipment and good health of the snake. Wish me luck :-/
