cage/tank setup for easy cleanings

bradc Oct 15, 2003 03:39 PM

Hi experts,

I am not new to the turtle hobby and I was wondering if there is a simple setup that I can follow in terms of tank setup/cage setup. I keep a few pyxidea mouhouti specimens that I use a big water dish with about 3" of water , changed daily, orchid bark as substrate, and a ceramic heat emitter as a heat source for keeping it between 75-80F at one end of the indoor enclosure and cooler on the other end. I have used this same method for years and I hope to try something new.

However, the routine cleanings of this indoor enclosure is very time consuming. I have thought of using heated, filtered, pump-circulated water which flows into the tank at one end, and drains out at the other end onto a large sump, with a depth of 2" as a 'substrate', with some big stepping stones as the land portion to minimize dealing with the daily cleaning of water dishes and weekly cleaning of the orchid bark stuff....

Has anyone tried this before?

Thanks for any inputs...

Brad

Brad,
Someone just put a self-pumping filter, that heats the out flow. Since I'm not presently in the market so I didn't take notice of the manufacturer. So it's out there. If I can find it on-line I'll post it for you.

Brad,
Tetra-tec is the filter brand that has an optional heater element that installs in the filter. "petsolutions.com" sells it.
WIsh you luck with the new set-up.
