Update PIC on Vivid, my screaming tangerine hybino CT male

StarGecko Oct 15, 2003 04:34 PM

Orange continues to take over his body, carrot pigment is developing on body(back knees, center of original bands). Orange spots keep multiplying all over his tail, right down to the end of the tail. In a month I expect the front part of his body to be all orange, in three months I expect he should be totally orange (fingers crossed). Can't wait to see how much more orange pops up on that tail.

He is awsome. I think he will go just about completley orange. Then you'll have to keep explaining "no he's a hybino".

I like him a lot - great color. I have seen your geckos get better and better, congrats on your success.

I wish there were Rainwaters that looked like that - my Tremper project is up and running, but I hope to add pattern to the color. I am very impressed with your Albino's though - keep those pictures comin!!!!

Here's a pic of one of my Rainwaters - she has a varying degree of orange to her - she started my tangering Rainwater project for me last year.

Take Care, Great Job!!!

I got lucky with Vivid, he was the result of outcrossing my hypotang albino male to a SGHTC who turned out to be het Tremper allbino (lucky me!). Overall, I didn't get much in quantity this breeding season, but I am very happy with the quality I got on many of my 2003 animals. I didn't breed a lot of animals I could have bred, but now those nice tang albino 2002 females I held back are really fat and plenty old enough to produce lots of great babies for 2004, with this guy Vivid as stud, 2004 should be an amazing year (fingers crossed)! I am particularly looking forward to seeing the results of crossing Vivid, my best of 2003, with Lola, a screaming tangerine albino female who was my best of 2002 (did not breed her this year). Both are 50% poss. het patternless, so there's even a slight chance I could get a screaming tangerine patternless albino...wouldn't that be something!

I'm starting a tang albino stripe project in 2004 myself, but I probably won't get tang albino stripes from it til 2006. I won't be using Vivid as a stud for that though, or the stripes would dissappear! I'll have to hold back one of my males that's less hypo than either Vivid or Vivid's father. I produced a lot more males than I had planned on this year, and though I've already sold a number of them, I have quite a few to to choose from still.

That's a very pretty Rainwater! Looks extremely healthy, too! So far I haven't seen the rainwaters reach the degree of orange the best trempers can, but I know some people are working on outcrossing them with some really nice tangs, and I'm sure the orange can be increased on them, just as it can still with the Trempers. In any case, I think the outcrossing (to create tang albino CT's, stripe albinos, etc.) is very good for both strains, as they've been inbred for quite a few generations.

Here's how I started my hybino line:

I got my foundation male back in 2000 from tremper. He was advertised as orange phase (this was back before "tang" was the readily accepted term) het patternless. He was the most expensive animal Tremper had available at the time, a real knockout, and the only het patternless. As my goal was to create an all-orange albino gecko, the combo of orange and het patternless seemed ideal. He has turned out to be hypo, with orange covering most of his body. A year or so ago I heard rumors that what Ron was calling patternless was really hypo. Given that the animal he sold me was hypo, I queried Ron in email to confirm that the gecko really is het patternless as in "leucistic". He reaffirmed that it was het patternless, as in "leucistic". I only had a few offspring from a couple of his kids, and have not had any patt's hatch out yet, but with the numbers I've had that is to be expected.

Vivid's mother is a superhypo tang CT. My breeding plan has been to create all all-orange albino gecko- either hypotang albinos and/or tang PA's. I had planned on creating hets with her this year to breed back in 2004, and work more hypo genes, CT genes and strong tang color into my tang albino line. In a stroke of good luck, she turned out to already be het albino herself, and I got Vivid this year, as well as some other nice offpring. In another stroke of luck, I had some temp fluctuations in my hovabator early in the season and Vivid, who I had intended to be female, turned out to be male.

I had been building the foundations of my tang hybino line with my hypo tang foundation male and the females I have crossed and outcrossed him with since I began breeding. The lucky strokes of my SHTCT female being het albino, and the (so far) best and first offspring being male basically put me a year ahead of the game in my breeding plan. I am hoping that Vivid also inherited the patternless gene. I will definately be doing the happy dance if I get some screaming tangerine patternless albinos next year. I will be mating my original male to some females, in the hopes of creating a patternless tang albino (in case Vivid is not het patternless).

Foundation male purchased in 2001 from Tremper, not 2000.
