American Bullfrog Set-up

guttly Oct 15, 2003 05:51 PM

I have an Albino American Bullfrog. I have kept him for a little over a year in a 55 gallonw/ glass top(open some to vent) and dual full spectrum flouresents. Inside the cage the substrate is gravel sloped into water with a submersable filter. He also has a cave that he spends his time in during the day.
I am moving him back home from my moms house in Pa( im in Va). The tank will be dissasembled for the move. I was wondering what the best set-up fot this species was. I know the gravel is a problem. I am wanting to change it around some and would like to make it better.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick Good

The best substrate is the Bed A Beast. You don't have to worry about impaction like you do with gravel and it only costs like $5 a brick which covers a 50 gallon with 1 inch of soil. You'll just want to add a plexi divider to hold the substrate back from the water. VERY easy project, all you'll need is a hunk of plexi cut to fit and some aquarium silicone (about $4 a tube)

If at all possible, I'd get him a larger tank... perhaps a 75 gallon so that he'll have lots of hopping and roaming space and still have a good sized water area. (Maybe divide the tank 60 land 40 water)

Other than that, I'm sure that you have the rest under controll!!
