Rankin/Bearded Dragons?

shek May 28, 2003 12:36 PM

Hi all.. I've made a few post on here about my 2 new baby dragons. Well.. I am currently thinking that what I was sold were not bearded dragons but rankin dragons.. At least they appear to me that way. Needless to say I am not happy with the petstore. I went back there today but the manager had never even heard of rankins and the breader she got them from was not available.. Im wondering, is it that easy to mistake the two? How can I tell for sure? If you bought two beardies that turned out to be rankins what would you do?
When i bought them a month ago they were about 2 3/4" and 3 1/4". Now they are both 4 1/4". I can only guess they are around 1 1/2 to 2 months old.. but Im not sure how big either species should be at that age.
argg.. suggestions?

i think that i would be happy if i went to the pet store and "accidently" got two rankins instead of beardies. rankins are a lot harder to come by, and usually more expensive. what makes you think that they are rankins instead of beardies? rankins heads are a little differently shaped. here is a photo of mine.

Well.. After seeing the size of several 3mo old dragons at another petstore I started wondering since mine are so much smaller. After looking around at all the pics I noticed they both look EXACTLY like this pic.

Its not really a question of 'worth' for me.. I just really want to know what they are.. and I'm sure the petstore would like to know what they are selling as well.

Many people often mistake small/slow growing beardies for rankins. If you post a photo, I'm sure we could tell you for sure.
It is very unlikely that your pet store would have sold you a rankins as a bearded. There are not that many breeders breeding rankins and when they do, especially when they sell to pet stores, they go for a lot more money. For example, wholesale pricing on 10 lots of beardies run around $25ea or even less (esp. for normals), wholesale on rankins runs $50ea or more.
Post a photo!

I bought a basilisk from my pet store, who sold it as a chinese water dragon. They sold it for 20 bucks, I re-sold it to a breeder for $90.

I am still confused on Rankins! Does someone out there have a picture with a rankin and a bearded dragon that they could put side by side so we could see the differance?? Thanks!

Have the dragons been housed together? They need to be the same size as the smaller will stress and not grow as fast. Are they 2 males?? Should not keep males together. They will stress on each other and neither will grow fast..

They were housed together when I bought them a month ago. They are currently still housed together. They are WAY to small to tell their gender and thus I'm thinking way to small to have complications because of it. They don't seem stressed and they are eating. =)
I am of course planning to seperate one of them assuming they dont turn out to both be female.
On another note.. I have spent the afternoon internet shopping for a digital camera. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures soon.

Instead of spending $300 on a digital camera, shop for a good book on bearded dragons. 'The Bearded Dragon: An Owner's Guide To A Happy Healthy Pet' by Steve Grenard has pictures of all species of bearded dragons, including the rankins. This should give you the pictures to compare with yours and other bearded dragons.
