Painteds and "quarter turtles"?

jediknightbria Oct 15, 2003 08:22 PM

I saw some painted turtles the other day and was wondering, do they get along well with RES? They looked pretty and I think I might like to get one someday.
Also, a friend of the family was telling me that she had had a "quarter turtle" for about ten years before she gave it away. She said it was a tiny aquatic turtle, about the size of a quarter, and it stayed that small all its life. Does anyone have any info on these? A website I could go to perhaps?

Thanks,
Lauri

Lauri,

Your friend had probably purchased a baby red-eared slider sold illegally from a misinformed or underhanded pet store or street vendor. NO turtle stays that small it's entire life, unless it receives grossly inadequate care - and then it dies well short of it's natural life span.

As for combining RES and painteds, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a large pond. Male painteds can be brutal to females of any species.
