Wonderful news for Bearded Dragons!

CheriS Oct 15, 2003 09:03 PM

Wonderful news, as some of you know we have an interest in trying to find an effective cure for Yellow Fungus Disease in bearded dragons and better medical personnel knowledge on diagnosing it. I got an email from the researcher I have been talking to about this for a year and who recently has been actively seeking funding for this.

He was invited to speak for an hour at the joint annual meeting of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) and the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) in Minneapolis on fungi and fungal diseases in reptiles as a Focus Group presentation . He used some of the pictures we had of YFD and some of his and talked a bit about YFD. At the banquet that night, the ARAV Conservation and Research Committee announced they had retained two projects for funding out of 12 proposals that had been received this year and one of them was his on CANV and other reptile fungal pathogens to antifungal drugs.

He got the grant from ARAV!!!!!!! This week his request and our letters of support go off to Morris Animal Foundation also. Not only a researcher to take it on, but one that has VAST experience in fungi and fungal diseases in reptiles! I am so happy I can dance!

2001. One infected the other, the first came from Flukers, and had it when he came to us, but at that time is was not known what it was, how long a time they can have it and not show any signs or even have a name for it, let alone a treatment routine. The first signs we saw was on his foot and thought he had got baby food peaches on it, then it was on his tummy.... it spread, got worse, we took him to several vets and wrote so many universities and researchers, thats how I first met the man that just got this funding, he was one of the few that responded with an idea and we have kept in contact for 2 years, sharing ideas and data.

The 2nd one was from the Zilla/goldfroggy line.... just a wonderful dragon. And once we realized something was wrong with the first, the other had already been infected. Thats what made getting CC from JoelR so special, not only was she a carbon copy of her mother that I had wanted to buy that Joel beat me too, she is a niece to the one we lost. Her mother and our Mickey were brother and sister. We lost Mickey at 10 months old, a dragon that taught me so much information on care and medical information about bearded dragons, he will never be forgotten, a part of him lives on in CC and in the research that has been done to date on beardies that hopefully will lead to a solid, safe cure and more awareness for Vets to recognize what it is in the future.

Mickey and Elliott appear at the top of our website, so we never forget them ......this was our beloved Mickey

That's terribly sad..and such a beautiful dragon too.
I'm glad you have CC.
Some people don't understand how attached we can get to these wonderful creatures. Losing them is no different then losing a family cat or dog.
I just can't even imagine.

That's great Cheri! Certainly glad he was able to get his grant to continue his research into YFD. Will also let the bearded dragon egroup know the good news.
