when or if to treat for parasites

compasscreek Oct 15, 2003 10:01 PM

we are in the process of getting fecals done on our chameleons. they have all just had a check up by a reputable reptile vet and he said they looked good but we needed fecals done to make sure there were no underlying problems. my wife too "samples" to work tonight to have them tested.

my question is do you treat any parasite found or only certain ones? what is a "typical treatment and for how long(is it a 1 dose treatment or a series)does a treatment last?

my wife is dstill at work and hasn't called so i'm probably "jumping the gun", but i'm usually a "what is the worst that could happen" type of guy.lol

Are these cb chams? If so and they are healthy, and there are no huge populations of any particular parasite found (most animals have some at most times), I would not treat. If these are wc chams who are not yet acclimated I would definitely treat. Panacur/Flagyl hits most common intestinal bugs so these are often used as a "shotgun" approach. Some less common parasites are sensitive to Ivermectin, but this is a trickier drug and shouldn't be used unless there is a significant specific problem.
