HELP! I think my crested is dying

kurt18 Oct 15, 2003 10:11 PM

I have two crested geckos. The Female of my pair seems very healthy, but my male seems not to be eating and is loosing weight quick. I'm affraid that it will starve itself to death. Does anyone have any tips on how to get my crested to eat?

First off, I would separate the two, give the male his own cage as there is a good chance the female may be taking all the food. Second, get a fecal to a vet to rule out parasites. You may have to force feed him as well if he is getting thin very fast and still won't eat in the new container.

Unfortunatley crested geckos are not my speciality, hopefully those here with more experience can give you more advice.

Hey,
LdyPayne gave you some good advice. If the two are together now def separate them into their own cages. Males will often cut back on eating when there is a female present, esp during the breeding season. Guess their minds are too busy in the gutter . Also like LdyPayne said the female could be a more aggressive hunter. Just in case do get the fecal done, which you really should get whenever you get a new reptile regardless of were you purchased it. Other then that if this continues to be a common thing I recommend keeping them together indefinitely and only introducing the male for a few months during the breeding season. Females can retain sperm and continue to lay through out the season. I actually recently had a female lay eggs and she has not been with a male since April of 02. Guess what…..they are fertile!?! So their ability to retain is probably much greater then most people think. Anyway best of luck and keep us posted.
