MealWorm Colony?

OnceAHero Oct 16, 2003 02:56 AM

Hi there. I'm just curious, but how many mealworms would you say are needed to create a self sustaining colony that can also feed one juvenile Leo? Also, how large of a container would you say such a colony would need?

You can start a colony like that easily in a 12 qt. rubbermaind or sterilite. Just make sure you have a good temp of around 85 degrees and some good quality feed. I use unprocessed bran. Its available at most feed stores.

Would unmedicated chicken feed be suitable? There's a livestock feed store in town selling the stuff for dirt cheap and I think it would be good to use, but am I correct?

Not sure never used that stuff. But a feed store should have regular unprocessed bran and I know for a fact it works well!

I know there are a bunch of different types of chicken feed, but if you can get layer mash, that should work not only for feeding your colony but also as a gutload. It's loaded with callcium and nutrients for the hens that are laying eggs.

Actually quite a few more than 50, like 200 - 250. Why?

Well, juvies grow up for one.

Also, they take a while to get going and it is easier to give a few away or feed the birds than to catch up. I have tried and it is tough.

And how many of you honestly thought you would stop at one gecko and couldn't?
