Python poop vs. colubrid poop question

KenW Oct 16, 2003 07:29 AM

I'm considering a black milksnake, black pine snake, or another colubrid for my next snake. I've kept jungle carpet pythons and Kenyan sand boas. Someone told me that colubrid poop/feces is way more runny and more frequent than python or boa poop. Is this true? Also, it more smelly? One website I read said that Pituophis poop is more smelly than those of the kingsnake or ratsnake. Is this true?

Thanks in advance. I know these might sound like silly questions but I want to make a good choice about my next snake. This is something I'd like to know ahead of time before I commit to the snake.

Hi! Having a corn snake and a ball python, I can say that the BP's poop is more solid, and about once every week, as opposed to the corn, which poops every 2 days or so and it is less formed. Smell is no different. It all smells like sh...poop.

Colubrids poop more often. Pits tend to poop more voluminously, and also have a habit of smearing it around if it isn't cleaned up promptly.

I wouldn't think that differences in poop would be enough to discourage you from getting a particular animal. It's just snake poop, which is pretty inoffensive, all things considered. They don't even do it every day.

In my experience, pituophis poo is the nastiest. But that's no problem if you remove it fast. On another note, python poo is nasty too. For that matter, all poo is nasty.

Between Drymarchon and L.T. gaigeae that’s all I do is clean poop!

Large Black Milk Snakes poops are less nasty that Drymarchon poops unless fish is added to the diet. Fish adds IMO a lot to the diet and well being of the animal. BUT you will pay the price for there happiness. Regardless poop is poop!
