mushroom mycelium

jungle Oct 16, 2003 11:21 AM

Two summers ago I spiked my substrate with mushroom mycelium that I gathered in the woods. For a year only a few mushrooms popped up from time to time. Recently they started popping up everywhere and mycelium is everywhere. It looks awesome. However, I am concerned that the mycelium will take over the tank (Its on the wood, the substrate, and all through the coco panels). I think I will introduce springtails because I heard they eat mycelium. Are there any other bugs I can introduce to control the mycelium?

When you see a toadstool/mushroom...what you are looking at is
the reproductive structure of a huge underground network of fungi.
The mushrooms/toadstools poke up and drop spores into the air/water
that start new fungi. Under the ground is the mycelia which is
the main body of the fungus. It looks like thick
cobwebs, and spreads in concentric circles away from where
it started.

It will control itself and peter out. It would be great to be able to have springtails in the tank, however. My frogs always hunt them down before they can get established anywhere.
