Sulcata with ongoing respiratory disease

Nikki22 Oct 16, 2003 12:50 PM

Hey guys,
My tort has had a kinduv wheezy sound when he breaths going on 21/2 weeks now. It kinduv sounds like someone with a congested nose. The vet said it was upper respiratory and put him on Baytril 12 days ago and it started to sound more quiet this weekend but now the sound has returned. Everything else is normal (behavior, eyes, no discharge...) Any ideas on what this can be? I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow. Do tort's get allergies?

I'm really worried about my baby although, he doesn't seem to bothered by it. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanx,
Nikki

Sounds like you may not be providing enough humidity.
Also, If the tortoise is a very young animal try utilizing a "Microclimate".
This can easily be done by cutting an opening in the side of a plastic container and placing damp moss or papertowels inside.
Place the container close to the basking area and see if this improves the condition over the next couple of days.
Good Luck

I was thinking humidity too since he went from hot, humid, outdoor MO to dry indoor heat. Put a humidifier in last night - no change yet. He's a 5 yr older and I always soak him more frequently in the dry, indoor season.

Vet said she would give him some flagyl in case it was parasitic.

Thanks,
Nikki

in case you missed my main point in my longer post higher up,
don't run the humidifier at night and stop soaking him. You
can read my longer message above for explainations.
