Lighting / Bulbs / Thermometer

x1angelbabyx Oct 16, 2003 01:03 PM

although my leo's tank is next to the window where the light comes in during the day, the weather in San Francisco ALWAYS changes... one day it could be hot & the next it could be raining. when it's hot, i just leave the blinds open and the light off - and when it's cold, the blinds are closed to keep in some humidity and the light is on... the thing is - my electricity bill went up this month and my mom is blaming it on the lizard. is there any cheap lighting that i can use that keeps the temps between 86F-90F during the day and between 78F-82F at night without using up a lot of the electricity? right now, i have a 75W basking bulb that keeps the temps at 86F-90F during the day and a 60W red bulb that keeps the temps between 78F-82F at night.

Also, I've been reading that the sticky thermometers aren't as accurate, but it came with the tank set-up that I got from a kid that didn't want his leo anymore. If I remove the sticky thermometer from the inside, will the stick stay on the tank? It's kind of low and my leo can reach it - I just don't want his little fingers to get stuck on them. What thermometer do you recommend?

Thanks all!

The stickiness will more than likely stay, but you should be able to remove it with any glue remover solvent or automotive glass bug remover.

Are you using an under tank heater? If the tank is near the window then your leo will get the day/night schedule from the outside light. If you're just looking for heating then an under tank heater is what you should get, leos require belly heat.

I just posted about using halogen lights in a series of three lights to provide day/night schedules for my leos and a reply stated that flouresent is cheap to use.

As for the stickiness of the temp strip. I use them, i know they aren't 100% accurate but i can't afford 8 digital ones right now ($30.00 each). Removing them destroys them BUT i used a razor blade to remove the remaining residue. Using harsh chemicals isn't a good idea if you don't have another place to keep your gecko for a few days, maybe longer.......i'd wait at least 4-5 days if not longer and thats with the tank outside airing out.
