Federal District (Mexico) herping....

herperjames Oct 16, 2003 01:07 PM

If you have herped near Mexico city, can you please tell me what snake you most commonly encountered? I found a herp list for the mountains south, sw, and se of Mexico city, but there is a good chance that I will be moving to the area just NW of Mexico city next summer, and I want to know what kind of snakes I might find (other then boring garters and non-handleable rattlesnakes).

How long would it take me by car to get within range of vine snakes, drymarchon, milk snakes, coral snakes, and other cool Mexican snakes, from Mexico city?

Thanks,
James

Drive to the the pacific or gulf coast to see any of the those species. Why no interest in 'crotes? There are some really neat small ones around the DF.

I love rattlers, but colubrids are more of my 'thing' right now. But when I imagine the herping in Mexico the species that come to mind are those of Lampropeltis, Micrurus, Drymarchon, Heterodon, Lichanura, Night snakes, lyre snakes, cat-eyed snakes, and Oxybelis. But the list for Distrito Federal that I found has Storeria, Diadophis, Salvadora, Rhadinea, etc. And the lizards there are just Sceloporous (from what I've read), not even whiptails or anything like that.
When I look at the habitat pics of this place I'm going to, it looks like tropical deciduous forest on foothills; the kind of habitat where I would expect to find tropical exotic species, not Storeria and Salvadora.

If you have any additional information for me about herps in the Federal district, it would be much appreciated.
I'm mostly looking for photos or description's of Conopsis biserialis, Conopsis nasus nasus, Salvadora bairdi, and Rhadinaea laureata.
Thanks,
James

Forget about dreaming about what you might find here or there in Mexico. Get down there, get out of town, start looking, then worry about identifying stuff later. If I went down just for polystictus or Micrurus, I'd be so focused on that that I'd ignore everything else. I've caught about everything there is here in California and trust me when I tell you that one good trip to central Mexico in July, August, or September will blow your mind. It's like your best trip to SoCal times 10. You're over-thinking this thing. Quit analyzing it and get down there and do it!
