well prob 36 inches long, by 12 to 24 inches wide. Nothing under 24 inches long by 12 inches wide. You want the cage to be long, plenty of room to run, dig, and hunt. You can buy glass, or plexi glass, cut it to size with a good hack saw, and use silicon to glue your pieces together, and well i guess you could also use wood, but i hear some types aren't to good for the animal.
what about oak wood?
Here's my cage. The ledges are made of polystyrene (styrofoam) covered in tile grout. It's about 4 feet long, 2 feet deep, & 1.5 feet high. If you do soemthing like this, make sure you completely cover the polystyrene. It's toxic.

i really like that..... how did you hang the shelves? and is the back and sides wood? if so what kind?
and i likedthe idea of having different levels to bask.....thats really nice, you should make plans to build that enclosure.
The lower shelves have supports that go down to the ground & they're kinda grouted to the side of the cage. The two pieces in the corner are glued in with Liquid Nails. The rest of the cage is wood. I didn't make that part. I just did the basking ledges.
but still its a very good idea and i like the way it turned out great
