Question regarding single frog

maxwells Oct 16, 2003 02:11 PM

I have a single Ole Marie d. tinctorius in a “greenhouse” style terrarium. She’s been rather odd lately, not moving all that much, sitting in what appears to be awkward positions.

I have two other frogs, in a different viv, but with extremely similar set ups. Same food, light & temps. The pair has a new pond, but that’s it for a good deal of differences. The pair are as happy as can be, playing “grab-a$$” as my husband calls it, hopping around, eating everything they can hunt… but little Ollie just looks depressed, if a frog can do that.

I’ve heard much talk regarding the equating good husbandry with frogs breeding. With this lone frog, is she best served by getting another specimen for her “entertainment” since she has no opportunity to breed or interact? Thoughts?

Is the vivarium properly ventilated? Stale air can create alot of problems with the vivarium itself as well as the frogs. As the waste matter and substrate decompose they put off alot of carbon dioxide. This is where problems with bacteria and fungus comes into play. I highly recommend that you remove that frog from the vivarium and place it in a 1 to 2 gallon shoebox that is kept immaculately clean. If problems persist, contact a vet, such as Dr. Frye, DVM (Dr.Frye@comcast.net. He is a very good vet and responds quickly through email. He also has a large collection of frogs himself.

I moved her last night, after observing this "strange" behaviour for two days. She's got papertowel, and a piece of Pothos, that's it. If the behaviour persists, I will seek vet help, but it there any thoughts around "companionship" issues? Or am I looking for a justification to get her a another Ollie?

companionship is not a factor with darts.
