Has anyone had any experience with the Canon 10D?

oldherper Oct 16, 2003 02:14 PM

I'm looking to buy a digital SLR body to use with my current Canon SLR lenses. The 60D and 30D are a bit pricey and the new EOS Rebel 300D doesn't really have all the features I want (no mirror lockup for one thing).

I was just wondering if anyone had used a 10D and what they thought about it for wildlife photography. I am currently using a Canon EOS3 35mm camera (main body) and an Elan IIE (backup).

One of my photography buds has one that I used with my 28 to 105 USM and it works great! I'm saving to get one ASAP. The Digi Rebel is essentially the same camera (CMOS) with a few features taken off (like you said). Pictures are awesume! lots less noise than my Canon G3. My main complaint is that my current after market Sunpak Flash that worked fine on my A2 won't work on the 10D; my friend had to go out and buy a Canon Flash. And now that I have been spoiled with my "flip and twist LCD", view finders seem almost a pain. I really wish the 10D had that option. The 10D (and RebelD) will also not allow LCD shot preview/composure. The LCD is purely post-shot review.

Still getting one though, you should see the detail in an 11x14. 35mm is a dying format I'm afraid.

Thanks! That's what I needed to know. I don't think all of the things that are unique to digital cameras will bother me much because I'm still a dinosaur and still shooting 35mm slides anyway.....haven't gotten into the digital thing much yet.

I use a Canon Speedlight 550EX flash..I assume that will work?

The 550 is what he bought and it works fine. You will love digital once you get used to all the possibilities. Get a good post processing program like photoshop or photoimpact, add your compact flash and you have your own darkroom right on your PC. Then you can post your pictures on the net or sign up for a service like photoworks.com, walmart.com, costco.com, shutterfly.com or many others to get whatever prints you like via upload to their site. No more wasted 35 mm prints that didn't turn out like you wanted. I've pretty much went all digital at this point. I've sold my Elan and am considering selling my A2 if my wife will let me. Have fun and good luck..JP

I've been using the 10D since it was available, I"ve now put my Nikon D1X up for sale as well as most of my 35mm units! For proof of it's perfomance check out my web site.

www.friendlyfotos.com check out the gallery and on each photo is some info.

I'm using the 420ex as well as a metz 45cl4 unit with the telephoto attatchment. I've used alot of different lenses and for normal shots canon's 24-85mm does the job for me...for telephoto work you can't beat the versatility of Canon's 100-400 image stabilized lens....

Hope this helps, need any more info feel free to e-mail me

Thanks! I tried to order one, but guess what? They are on about a 2 month backorder. It seems that Canon decided to shut down 2 of the 3 10D production lines to work on the new Rebel digital body. Unfortunately, the Rebel does not have the features I need (mirror lockup being the main one). So, I have to wait now....I could buy the 1Ds, if I wanted to spend $8,000.00 on a camera body...I think I'll just wait.
