My pellet babies at feeding time...

GoldDragon Oct 16, 2003 03:10 PM

Just wanted to share a picture of my pellet kids at feeding time. They are all doing great on pellets, greens and mini-mealworms. Going to switch them all over to silkworms instead of mealworms in a few weeks though. The oldest is 23 days and all are getting big! Will post more pictures later...

How old is he? Have you tried the Rep-Cal pellets? How have you tried to feed them to him? Does he eat greens?

2 months,

I put them in a bowl, moist, no interest, then I tried holding a pellet in front of him, no interest, it was kind of funny I kinda dropped it on his face...I put some crickets in there and he went for them, so he was hungry, just not into the pellets just yet.

Same here, Zeo won't eat them. I tried hand feeding, soaking in juice,he ignores them. I think unless they were started on them, you probably won't get them on them.

I don't know, a long time ago, I had a dragon that would only eat them when i wasn't looking, I would be doing something not paying attention, and I'd hear him crunching on them for a few minutes, like, more than just a nibble, but they were always dry cause they'd sit in there all day....

First I would say to mix the pellets with the greens that you give him everyday. Put them right on top so if he does eat his greens, then he would have to dig through the pellets and he might try one. All my dragons eat the pellets and also they all love their greens. I sometimes see them fighting over the greens…lol…who would have thought it was that easy. Do you feed him any kinds of worms? If so, try mixing them in with the greens/pellets also.

I also feed all my treats that I give my dragons off 8” tongs. That way when they see the tongs, they know it is something to eat. I can feed the babies right off the tongs now. They will even eat the pellets when I feed them. I sometimes trick them by giving them a few mealworms, then a pellet. Gets them every time I also noticed that they like the brown pellets more... funny little guys...

All dragons should eat the pellets if given the chance to try them their own way. I converted 3 adult dragons to pellets and all my babies are eating pellets. You just have to give them time and maybe do a little “tough love” if they still hold out.

Try a few different things and read back through some of the forums for other ways to get them to try it.
Good luck,
Steve

what do you mean tough love? Did you ever just hold out and kind of give them no other choice but to eat pellets?

GoldDragon Oct 16, 2003 04:00 PM

The “Tough Love” is only on the cricket part. If your dragon is eating his greens and you are also supplementing his diet with some other kind of live prey, then the crickets can go. You just cant feed your dragon 100 crickets a day, then the next day feed him zero crickets and all pellets, that will not work. Just make it a gradual change and it should work just fine. Even if you do not see him eating them, they are curious creatures and will try them at some point.

Also, if you find your pellets getting to dry during the day, move them farther away from the heated side or just make up a plate of new ones...
Good luck and keep us posted...
