pimp_n_python Oct 16, 2003 03:22 PM

i just got a new corn snake and i don't know anything about them i have pythons and they are so calm. my new corn freaks out when i go to pick him up and if i don't get him on the first try he buggers off down his burrow hole and it really bothers me
is this a normal trait if so how can i calm him down is there some way to pick them up that i don't know about or do i just have to pick him every day and maybe some day he'll calm down.
thanks dave

Colubrids in general are much more active than boids. They very rarely settle down when being held like a boa or python will.

Especially when they are babies they are going to be a lot more freaked out by your presence. Eventually though, with periodic handling, it will calm down (at least it should, some stay feisty no matter how much handling you do).

Keep handling him/her. My 4 year old daughter handles our newest hatchling and the hatchlings parents. All parties seem to remain pretty calm.

I agree with Amanda. They'll never get quite as calm as ball pythons, but most do calm down. I do have one that's a complete bugger, even after two years of gettin' bit a ton. She's just got a bad temperment. Ah well, I like her anyway...

Corns are active creatures. I agree that most should calm down with regular handling. You may also find that the mature corn may be more calm than the young corn, as with most snakes. However, there are exceptions to every rule and some snakes are skittish their whole lives. What you should expect when handling your snake is an animal that is fairly active, unlike a boa or python. But that's part of the fun of having a corn snake!
