2 heating lamps and STILL not hot enough?

smurfskill Oct 16, 2003 03:28 PM

I have a 150 watt, and a 50 watt, and it's still not hot enough...my warm size says 84, basking says 100...doesn't it need to be 115 and 90?

105-115 for basking site, 80-85 on the cool side. You could try raising the area of your basking site, if possible or try lowering the light.

The basking driftwood is touching the screen...

well, I used a household thermometer, I held it under the light about where the spot is, it shot up past 106, I think it may be the cheap stick on thermometers I'm using, maybe getting the wrong reading...

some similar store. The stick on type are horribly inaccurate. Try this. Go to where you bought the stick ons and look at all of the same one's they have there. Do they read the same temp? That will give you an idea of how bad they are.

Stick on thermometers should be banned. All of them are off by at least 5 degrees. I got my indoor/outdoor dig therm. with probe at W-Mart for about 12 bucks. Or you could go more expensive and get a temp gun, but the probes are good too.

I would say between 100 and 110 for adults and closer to 110 for babies...

>>>>>>You better get an accurate thermometer. A 60 watt light bulb can raise the temperature on a basking rock to around 100 to 105 degrees at about 6 or 7 inches. Especially if there isn't too much ventilation. You just have to experiment until you get things right. I had my tank set up and "running" for over a week to make sure all the temps were correct before having my first beardie sent to me. I use raised basking platforms and adjust bulb wattage to get proper basking temps.
