HELP!!!!!!!!!

hroberts Oct 16, 2003 06:19 PM

I have a collard lizard and a Bearded Dragon. well my bearded dragon decided tonight that he wanted to bite the collard. He did and now my collard has a broken front arm, and is bleeding a little. Does anybody have any suggestions until I can get to the vet tomorrow when they open. I called the local emergency vet and they don't deal with reptiles.

Please help....... I don't want anything to happen to the little guy.

as gently as possible wash the bite, do you have benadine or providine iodine solution? If so put some on cotton ball and squeeze into bite, or just warm water , but rinse it. Then I would apply an antibiotc ointment(neosporin or triple antibiotic) to wound. And because you cant get the poor guy to the vet tonight , the only thing you can do is let him sleep, so as not to move the break much. Geesh must be painful, dang I would also take everything out of the enclosure that he might jump on or off and hurt it more. And after cleaning the bite, I would not handle him much either. I wish there was something more to say, Please let us know how he makes out. And If you have the beardie living with the collared please keep them seperated! A Beardie can eat a collared, or mangle him badly ! Good Luck and so sorry! Eve

The big, mean bearded has been moved to live with other reptles closer to his size. He has been well behaved up until tonight. the bleeding has been stopped and he is sleeping right now. He went to sleep soon afterwards. He wanted to stay next to me though and not go into the medical cage. He is in there now. Should I wake him up to put iodine on him?

Thanks for your help

I would wake him, but clean it as quickly and unobtrusively as possible. The iodine can quell a possible infection before the morning. If you haven't moved him off of sand, I would do that to keep the wound clean.

I am sorry to hear your lizard was injured. I see you have some good advice already on caring for the wound. However please understand keeping lizards of different species together, different size or not, is a bad idea. The obvious reason being the injuries which unfortunately have already occured or death in the worst case scenario. Another very good reason is disease, escpecially with Bearded Dragons for example Coccidia. Please do not take this as a critisizm but instead a friendly heads up to you or anyone else keeping different species together in the same enclosure. It is dangerous to your little scaled friends and none of want to see your friends hurt Again sorry to hear your little one is injured. Best of luck in a speedy recovery!
